Growth Form: Stout annuals.

Stems: Culms tall, hollow.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades flat, non–auriculate. Margins entire. Sheaths open to base; ligule short and membranous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence an open, drooping panicle; spikelets usually 2–3–flowered, large, rachilla hirsute to glabrous, prolonged behind uppermost floret, disarticulating above glumes and between florets; glumes subequal, usually more than 2 cm long, exceeding first floret and often the second; lemmas 5–7–nerved, glabrous, or pilose on lower ½, tough and indurate, dorsally awned, the awn arising near middle of lemma, stout, twisted and geniculate, sometimes small and straight or absent; palea shorter than lemma, 2–keeled. Florets bisexual (perfect). Stamens 3. Ovary superior.
